How UnitedHealthcare dental plans usually cover care
UnitedHealthcare offers several kinds of dental coverage, and it helps to know which one you have. Employer dental PPO plans from UnitedHealthcare often go by names such as National Options PPO, and UnitedHealthcare also sells individual dental PPO plans. UnitedHealthcare says some of its individual plans cover preventive care from the first day, with no waiting period.
We’re in network with UnitedHealthcare dental PPO plans. We also accept UnitedHealthcare (UHC) Dental for Texas Medicaid/CHIP — for children only — and Medicare Advantage plans that include dental benefits. See all insurance we accept for those plans.
Most dental PPO plans, from any carrier, share the same basic structure. The details below are typical, not a promise of what your plan pays — your employer or plan sets the exact rules, so check your plan.
| Type of care | Typical examples | How many PPO plans treat it |
|---|---|---|
| Preventive | Exams, cleanings, routine X-rays, fluoride, sealants | Often covered at the highest level, frequently without a deductible |
| Basic | Fillings, simple extractions, some gum treatment | Often covered at a middle level after the deductible |
| Major | Crowns, bridges, dentures, some root canals and implants | Often covered at a lower level, and may have a waiting period |
| Your UnitedHealthcare coverage | Can you use it here? |
|---|---|
| UnitedHealthcare dental PPO plan (employer or individual) | Yes, we’re in network |
| UHC Dental for Texas Medicaid/CHIP | Yes, for children only |
| UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plan with dental | Yes, we confirm the dental benefits first |
| Adult Medicaid | No, we are not in network for adult Medicaid |
Typical PPO rules still apply: a yearly deductible for basic and major care, an annual maximum, frequency limits on cleanings and X-rays, and on some plans waiting periods for major work. Check your plan for the exact details.
What we can do for UnitedHealthcare members
Many families have more than one kind of UnitedHealthcare coverage — a parent’s PPO, a child on UHC Dental, a grandparent on Medicare Advantage. We can see all of them in one office:
- Checkups and cleanings for the whole family, from age 1 through senior dentistry
- Kids’ care in our office: fluoride, sealants, and treatment of cavities with tooth-colored fillings and extractions
- Repairing and replacing teeth: root canals, crowns, bridges and dentures
- Same-day emergency visits during office hours — call first
- Saturday appointments, 9am–3pm
Estimating your cost
Your cost depends on which UnitedHealthcare plan you have, your deductible, the coverage level for each type of care and your remaining annual maximum. Medicare Advantage dental benefits vary a lot from plan to plan, so we always check them first.
Before treatment, you get a written estimate of what your plan is expected to pay and your share. Your plan makes the final decision when the claim is processed.
Without insurance, new patient visits are $49, $99 or $179. Root canals start at $899, crowns at $1,199, 3-unit bridges at $3,499 and dentures at $1,399 (per arch for full dentures). See dental prices. If UnitedHealthcare pays part and you owe the rest, you can spread the balance with Cherry, Sunbit or CareCredit (see financing options), or use an FSA or HSA card for dental treatment.
