A dental sealant is a thin coating painted onto the chewing surfaces of back teeth to seal the deep grooves where cavities often start. It needs no drilling or numbing and takes one short visit. Sealants are part of our preventive dentistry for children and adults.
The best time is soon after the permanent molars come in, around age 6 and again around age 12. Some adults with deep grooves and no fillings benefit too. Saturday visits are available.

Do you need dental sealants?
Sealants work best on healthy back teeth with deep grooves. They’re usually a good fit when:
- Your child’s six-year molars or twelve-year molars have just come in
- Your child has had cavities before, or brushing the back teeth is a struggle
- A teen or adult has deep grooves in the back teeth and no fillings or decay there
- We see early staining or soft spots in the grooves that haven’t become a cavity
Sealants are not a fix for a tooth that already has a cavity. That tooth needs a filling. If a child’s tooth needs a filling, we can do that here too.
How well do sealants work?
According to the CDC, sealants prevent about 80% of cavities in the back teeth for two years and keep protecting against about half of cavities for up to four years. They work best with fluoride and regular checkups, where we check them and touch them up if needed.
What happens at your visit?
- We check the tooth to make sure there’s no cavity under the groove.
- The tooth is cleaned and kept dry with cotton or a small isolation device.
- A mild gel is applied for a few seconds to help the sealant stick, then rinsed off.
- The liquid sealant is painted into the grooves and hardened with a curing light.
- We check your child’s bite and smooth any high spots.
There are no shots and nothing to recover from. Your child can eat and go back to school right after.
Cost, insurance and financing
Sealants are not on our published price list, so we give you a written estimate before treatment. Many PPO plans cover sealants for children’s permanent molars, often with age limits; we check your plan first. Children with Texas Medicaid or CHIP through DentaQuest, MCNA or UHC Dental can be seen here for checkups, sealants and routine treatment such as fillings. We work with most PPO plans and check your benefits before your visit, so you know what is covered. We also accept Medicare Advantage plans that include dental benefits. For children, we accept Texas Medicaid and CHIP through DentaQuest, MCNA and UHC Dental; we are not in network for adult Medicaid. Original Medicare (Parts A and B) does not cover routine dental care. See insurance we accept.
We accept Cherry, Sunbit and CareCredit for patient financing (see financing options), and you can use an FSA or HSA card for dental treatment.
Recovery and aftercare
- Eat and drink normally right away.
- Avoid chewing ice and hard candy, which can chip a sealant.
- Keep brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste; sealants protect the grooves, not the sides of the teeth.
- Come to checkups so we can check that the sealants are intact.
