How MetLife dental plans usually cover care
MetLife’s dental PPO plans are often called PDP plans, short for Preferred Dentist Program. MetLife describes its PDP Plus network as its largest dental PPO network. Dentists in a PPO network agree to set fees with the carrier, which is what keeps your share of the bill lower.
Most dental PPO plans, from any carrier, share the same basic structure. The details below are typical, not a promise of what your plan pays — your employer or plan sets the exact rules, so check your plan.
| Type of care | Typical examples | How many PPO plans treat it |
|---|---|---|
| Preventive | Exams, cleanings, routine X-rays, fluoride, sealants | Often covered at the highest level, frequently without a deductible |
| Basic | Fillings, simple extractions, some gum treatment | Often covered at a middle level after the deductible |
| Major | Crowns, bridges, dentures, some root canals and implants | Often covered at a lower level, and may have a waiting period |
Frequency limits: the rule MetLife members ask about most
Many plans cover a set number of cleanings and exams in a benefit period — often two a year — and limit how often some X-rays are covered, such as a full set of X-rays every few years. If you had a cleaning somewhere else recently, tell us when you book. We check your dates so a visit isn’t scheduled before your plan will pay for it.
Other typical rules: a yearly deductible before basic and major care is paid, an annual maximum the plan will pay in a benefit year, and waiting periods on some plans before major work is covered. Unused benefits usually do not roll over.
What we can do for MetLife members
Because preventive care is where most MetLife plans pay the most, regular visits are the easiest way to get value from your plan. We see the whole family:
- Checkups and cleanings for the whole family, from age 1 through senior dentistry
- Kids’ care in our office: fluoride, sealants, and treatment of cavities with tooth-colored fillings and extractions
- Repairing and replacing teeth: root canals, crowns, bridges and dentures
- Same-day emergency visits during office hours — call first
- Saturday appointments, 9am–3pm
Estimating your cost
With a MetLife PPO plan, your cost depends on your plan’s fee schedule, deductible, coverage level for each type of care and how much of your annual maximum is left. We look all of that up before your visit.
Before treatment, you get a written estimate of what your plan is expected to pay and your share. Your plan makes the final decision when the claim is processed.
Without insurance, new patient visits are $49, $99 or $179. Root canals start at $899, crowns at $1,199, 3-unit bridges at $3,499 and dentures at $1,399 (per arch for full dentures). See dental prices. If MetLife pays part and you owe the rest, you can spread the balance with Cherry, Sunbit or CareCredit (see financing options), or use an FSA or HSA card for dental treatment.
