How Cigna dental plans usually cover care
Cigna calls its dental PPO plans DPPO plans, and its dentist networks are the Cigna DPPO networks. Cigna notes that with a DPPO plan you can see any licensed dentist, but you usually save money with a dentist in network. In Texas, Cigna says its employer DPPO plan may appear under the name Cigna Dental Choice, using the same national DPPO network.
Cigna also sells dental HMO-style plans in some areas. Those work differently from a PPO, so check whether your card says DPPO before your visit.
Most dental PPO plans, from any carrier, share the same basic structure. The details below are typical, not a promise of what your plan pays — your employer or plan sets the exact rules, so check your plan.
| Type of care | Typical examples | How many PPO plans treat it |
|---|---|---|
| Preventive | Exams, cleanings, routine X-rays, fluoride, sealants | Often covered at the highest level, frequently without a deductible |
| Basic | Fillings, simple extractions, some gum treatment | Often covered at a middle level after the deductible |
| Major | Crowns, bridges, dentures, some root canals and implants | Often covered at a lower level, and may have a waiting period |
Gum care and your deductible
Many patients are surprised that a deep cleaning is not billed like a regular cleaning. Many plans treat scaling and root planing as basic care, which means the deductible usually applies first. If your gums bleed or you’ve been told you have pockets, we’ll show you what your Cigna plan is expected to pay before we start.
Other typical rules: a yearly deductible, an annual maximum, frequency limits on cleanings and X-rays, and on some plans a waiting period before major work such as crowns. Check your plan for the exact details.
What we can do for Cigna members
Whether you need a routine cleaning or help with gum disease, Cigna DPPO members can get most care in one office:
- Checkups and cleanings for the whole family, from age 1 through senior dentistry
- Kids’ care in our office: fluoride, sealants, and treatment of cavities with tooth-colored fillings and extractions
- Repairing and replacing teeth: root canals, crowns, bridges and dentures
- Deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) and gum disease treatment, with a written estimate first
- Same-day emergency visits during office hours — call first
- Saturday appointments, 9am–3pm
Estimating your cost
Your cost with a Cigna DPPO plan depends on Cigna’s network fees, your deductible, the coverage level for each type of care and your remaining annual maximum.
Before treatment, you get a written estimate of what your plan is expected to pay and your share. Your plan makes the final decision when the claim is processed.
Without insurance, new patient visits are $49, $99 or $179. Root canals start at $899, crowns at $1,199, 3-unit bridges at $3,499 and dentures at $1,399 (per arch for full dentures). See dental prices. If Cigna pays part and you owe the rest, you can spread the balance with Cherry, Sunbit or CareCredit (see financing options), or use an FSA or HSA card for dental treatment.
