How Sun Life dental plans usually cover care
Sun Life’s main dental PPO network is the Sun Life Dental Network. Sun Life says its PPO networks include dentists contracted through Dental Health Alliance (DHA) and through access arrangements with other dental networks. Most Sun Life dental plans are offered through employers, so the exact rules depend on your employer’s plan.
Most dental PPO plans, from any carrier, share the same basic structure. The details below are typical, not a promise of what your plan pays — your employer or plan sets the exact rules, so check your plan.
| Type of care | Typical examples | How many PPO plans treat it |
|---|---|---|
| Preventive | Exams, cleanings, routine X-rays, fluoride, sealants | Often covered at the highest level, frequently without a deductible |
| Basic | Fillings, simple extractions, some gum treatment | Often covered at a middle level after the deductible |
| Major | Crowns, bridges, dentures, some root canals and implants | Often covered at a lower level, and may have a waiting period |
New to your plan? Check for waiting periods
If you recently started a new job or switched plans, ask about waiting periods. Many plans cover checkups and cleanings right away but make you wait several months, or longer, before paying for basic or major care such as fillings, crowns or dentures. Some plans waive waiting periods if you had dental coverage before. We check this when we verify your benefits.
Other typical rules: a yearly deductible, an annual maximum and frequency limits on cleanings and X-rays. Check your plan for the exact details.
What we can do for Sun Life members
Even during a waiting period, preventive visits keep small problems from becoming big ones. Sun Life members can get the whole family’s care here:
- Checkups and cleanings for the whole family, from age 1 through senior dentistry
- Kids’ care in our office: fluoride, sealants, and treatment of cavities with tooth-colored fillings and extractions
- Repairing and replacing teeth: root canals, crowns, bridges and dentures
- Same-day emergency visits during office hours — call first
- Saturday appointments, 9am–3pm
Estimating your cost
With a Sun Life PPO plan, your cost depends on any waiting period, your deductible, the coverage level for each type of care and your remaining annual maximum. If a treatment falls inside a waiting period, we’ll show you the self-pay price and financing options.
Before treatment, you get a written estimate of what your plan is expected to pay and your share. Your plan makes the final decision when the claim is processed.
Without insurance, new patient visits are $49, $99 or $179. Root canals start at $899, crowns at $1,199, 3-unit bridges at $3,499 and dentures at $1,399 (per arch for full dentures). See dental prices. If Sun Life pays part and you owe the rest, you can spread the balance with Cherry, Sunbit or CareCredit (see financing options), or use an FSA or HSA card for dental treatment.
