How Delta Dental dental plans usually cover care
Delta Dental PPO plans use what Delta Dental calls a dual network: the Delta Dental PPO network and the Delta Dental Premier network. According to Delta Dental, members usually save the most with a PPO dentist, somewhat less with a Premier dentist, and the least with a dentist outside both networks.
That is why the network matters as much as the carrier name. Richmond Dental Care is in the Delta Dental PPO network; we are not a Delta Dental Premier dentist. When you call, we check your plan’s benefits so your estimate reflects PPO network fees.
Most dental PPO plans, from any carrier, share the same basic structure. The details below are typical, not a promise of what your plan pays — your employer or plan sets the exact rules, so check your plan.
| Type of care | Typical examples | How many PPO plans treat it |
|---|---|---|
| Preventive | Exams, cleanings, routine X-rays, fluoride, sealants | Often covered at the highest level, frequently without a deductible |
| Basic | Fillings, simple extractions, some gum treatment | Often covered at a middle level after the deductible |
| Major | Crowns, bridges, dentures, some root canals and implants | Often covered at a lower level, and may have a waiting period |
Planning bigger work like crowns
Crowns, bridges and dentures usually fall under major care, which many plans cover at a lower level than cleanings. Some plans also have a waiting period for major care if you’re new to the plan, and replacement rules if a crown was placed only a few years ago. We check these before recommending a treatment date.
Other typical rules: a yearly deductible, an annual maximum and frequency limits on cleanings and X-rays. Delta Dental is made up of separate regional companies, so plan rules vary — check your own plan.
What we can do for Delta Dental members
Delta Dental members can bring the whole family here, from a first checkup at age 1 to crowns and dentures:
- Checkups and cleanings for the whole family, from age 1 through senior dentistry
- Kids’ care in our office: fluoride, sealants, and treatment of cavities with tooth-colored fillings and extractions
- Repairing and replacing teeth: root canals, crowns, bridges and dentures
- Same-day emergency visits during office hours — call first
- Saturday appointments, 9am–3pm
Estimating your cost
Your cost depends on Delta Dental PPO network fees, your deductible, the coverage level for the type of care and how much of your annual maximum is left. Crowns and bridges take two visits here, with the final restoration placed about 5 days after the first visit.
Before treatment, you get a written estimate of what your plan is expected to pay and your share. Your plan makes the final decision when the claim is processed.
Without insurance, new patient visits are $49, $99 or $179. Root canals start at $899, crowns at $1,199, 3-unit bridges at $3,499 and dentures at $1,399 (per arch for full dentures). See dental prices. If Delta Dental pays part and you owe the rest, you can spread the balance with Cherry, Sunbit or CareCredit (see financing options), or use an FSA or HSA card for dental treatment.
