At a glance
After teeth whitening, sensitivity is common for 24–48 hours and then fades. For the first 48 hours, skip dark or staining foods and drinks such as coffee, tea, red wine and colas, and avoid tobacco. Whitening changes natural teeth only, so existing fillings, crowns and veneers keep their color.

What should I do after whitening?
- For the first 48 hours, choose light-colored foods and drinks: water, milk, rice, pasta, chicken, white fish, potatoes and bananas.
- Skip coffee, tea, red wine, colas, berries, soy sauce, tomato sauce and curry for the first 48 hours. If you have coffee, use a straw and rinse with water after.
- Don’t smoke or vape. Tobacco stains quickly and undoes results.
- If your teeth are sensitive, use a toothpaste for sensitive teeth and avoid very hot or very cold drinks for a day or two.
- For discomfort, follow the directions on the package or from your dentist.
- Using a take-home tray kit? Use only the amount of gel we showed you, wear the trays for the time we told you, and wipe away any gel that gets on your gums.
What is the timeline after whitening?
| Stage | What to expect | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| First 24 hours | Sensitivity or brief ‘zings’ are common; gums may feel slightly irritated | Light-colored foods, no tobacco, sensitive toothpaste |
| Days 2–7 | Sensitivity fades; color settles over the first days | Keep stain-causing foods limited; rinse with water after coffee or tea |
| Long term | Results slowly fade over months depending on your diet and habits | Regular cleanings, occasional touch-ups with trays as advised |
How do I make whitening results last?
- Rinse with water or brush after coffee, tea and red wine.
- Keep up with regular cleanings to remove surface stain.
- Use touch-up gel in your trays only as directed — more often is not better and can increase sensitivity.
- Avoid tobacco.
We offer both in-office whitening and take-home tray kits. See our teeth whitening page, or read can yellow teeth be whitened to understand what whitening can and can’t change.
